Dental Service

If you’re unable to visit a general dentist because of a health condition, we can provide you with dental care.

Once you’ve been referred into our service, we’ll ask you to come in for an appointment.

We’ll give you a dental check-up and ask you a few questions about your medical health and dental history. If needed, we’ll send you for an X-ray.

Afterwards, we’ll discuss whether or not you need treatment and explain the costs involved.

If you receive any benefits that exempt you from paying dental charges, please bring them along to this first appointment.

If you decide to go ahead with the treatment, we’ll book in your next appointment.

We accept adult referrals if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Have a learning, physical or severe medical disability which impacts on your dental treatment
  • Have a severe mental health problem or dementia which impacts on your dental treatment
  • Have a severe dental phobia and your needs can’t be met by NHS sedation services
  • Are unable to leave your home and might need domiciliary treatment

You can be referred into our service by your own dentist, your GP or other healthcare or social care professional.

We also take referrals for children who have complex dental issues or a particular dental problem that can’t be treated by their normal dentist. This can include needing several teeth out or having a severe infection that requires general anaesthetic in a hospital.

We can also help with children who might be uncooperative or nervous and require general anaesthetic to allow treatment.

Find out more about children’s dentistry on our Children, Young People and Families (CYPF) online resource.
