If you’re experiencing changes in your thinking skills, which are making it hard for you to carry out day-to-day tasks, we can help assess you for dementia and provide treatments.
Once you’re referred into our service, we’ll make an appointment for one of our psychiatrists or memory clinic nurses to visit you in your home or at a local clinic. It’s a good idea to bring a family member or carer along to your appointment as they can often help explain what the changes you’ve been experiencing.
We’ll carry out an assessment of your memory and other skills as this will help us with your diagnosis.
We may also ask you to do some further assessments to help us understand your difficulties fully. This could include a brain scan or a more detailed test of your current skills (also known as neuropsychology testing).
Once your assessment is finished, we’ll discuss your diagnosis and treatment options. We’ll also talk through the support that is available to you and your family or carers.
If you’re diagnosed with dementia, there are several treatment options we can discuss with you, including:
- Medication (which will be reviewed by your GP and at our memory clinic)
- Post-diagnostic counselling
- Cognitive stimulation therapy
- Support for life story work
- Appointments with our Dementia Advisors who can provide information, support and help plan for the future
- Educational programmes for your family and carers
If you’re not given a diagnosis but you’re showing signs of difficulties, we’ll book a follow up appointment with you in a year’s time to review your condition.
If you’re concerned about your memory or thinking skills, please make an appointment to see your GP first. They’ll be able to rule out other conditions and carry out their own assessment before referring you into our service.
