Psychological Medicine Service
Maintaining good mental health is just as important as maintaining good physical health.
If your mental health condition is causing you to feel stress, anxiety or leading you to rely on substances like alcohol and drugs, our Psychological Medicine Service (PMS) can assess your needs and support you in your recovery by referring you to appropriate community teams.
Effective care of a mental health condition can mean a better quality of life for you, and could help reduce the need for you to go back into hospital in future.
We can diagnose a range of mental health needs such as depression, psychosis and anxiety.
Based on where you’re being treated – whether it’s at Wexham Park Hospital or the Royal Berkshire Hospital – and your situation, we'll assess your mental needs. We'll then make treatment recommendations for you as part of your care.
We can also make sure you have the right guidance and support once you’ve left hospital, and that you can access resources through our community teams while you’re at home.
If you’re aged 18 to 65, you’ll be referred by the Acute Trust to our Working Age Team who offer a 24/7 service.
If you’re over the age of 65, our Older People service is accessible for the Acute Trust from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. For referrals made out of these hours, you’ll be referred to our Working Age Team.
If you’re under the age of 18, our children and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) can help you if you have concerns about your mental health, or the mental health of someone you’re caring for.
Referring you to our other services
Depending on your needs, we may refer you to other specialist services if we feel you could benefits from their support. This could include our Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT) teams, drug and alcohol services, and memory clinics.
Our Psychological Medicine Services is provided across both East Berkshire, based at Wexham Park Hospital, and West Berkshire, based at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.
You can be referred to us if you’re being treated at A&E or have been admitted to either of these hospitals.
Unfortunately, we don’t accept self referrals.
We have centres in Slough and Reading. Please do not attend one of our clinics unless you’ve been referred to our service.
